2009's event was a huge success thanks to donations by several area businesses and the unprecedented support of the Griffith residents.  I'd like to pass along a special Thank You to Jedi's Garden Restaurant for sponsoring our beer garden and Eurotan (www.eurotancompany.com) for sponsoring the band tent.  I'm happy to announce we have already started planning next year's event (2010) and are working to book the Relics (www.therelicsband.com) again.  Mark your calendar.  We hope to see you there.

Hoosier Burn Camp Boot Drive

The Hoosier Burn Camp is a non-profit organization that provides a group camp experience for boys and girls that have suffered burn injuries or have been hospitalized in Indiana due to a burn injury.  This is a small, mostly volunteer organization that has helped countless families despite the organization's limited budget.  Without volunteers and donations this camp will fail.  In many cases this week at camp may be the only time these kids are able to interact with others that have suffered from similar medical set backs.  All proceeds raised during the boot drive will go directly to the burn camp.  Please visit their web site at http://www.hoosierburncamp.org.  I'm sure you'll understand why this charity is so important to us.

Why do we hold fundraisers?

Unfortunately, many people don't realize the amount of many it takes to properly equip today's fire department.   Being located in Northwest Indiana we are equipped to respond to HAZMat emergencies, confined space entrapment emergencies, high angle rescue, and cold water rescue.  Of course, this is all in addition to performing traditional firefighter duties. 

In order to provide this level of protection we must seek alternative funding.  Each year we apply for several private, state, and federal grants.  In the event we are lucky enough to receive grant funds, many require a percentage of "matching funds".  Without the matching funds we are unable  to receive the grant funds.  In an effort to keep matching funds on hand, we hold annual fundraisers depositing the funds into the fire department donation account.  In addition to using the donation account for matching funds, we also use it to supplement small equipment purchases and to hold additional fundraisers.
